On April 1, 2025, the central government launched a new pension scheme called the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for its employees. This scheme promises to give a fixed pension to the employees after retirement. This scheme gives employees the option to separate from NPS i.e. National Pension System. The pension amount in NPS was not fixed. It depended on the money deposited at the time of retirement and the annuity purchased. Now central employees have to choose one of the two schemes. Its last date is 30 June.

In UPS, government employees will get 50% of their average basic salary for the last 12 months as a monthly pension. But for this, employees have to complete at least 25 years of service. At the same time, the amount received after retirement in NPS depends on the money deposited and annuity. But UPS provides more certainty to government employees.

How to apply for UPS?

Applying for UPS is very easy. Eligible employees have to fill out Form A2 or Form A1 and give it to their office head or DDO. You can submit this form both online and offline. This form of protection is available on the CRA website. After submitting the form, you will get a receipt from the nodal office. Keep this receipt safe with you. This is proof of your form submission.

Form A2 is for employees who are already working in the central government. Form A1 is for new employees who have joined the job on or after April 1, 2025.

What if the last date is over?

Employees who want to switch from NPS to UPS have to do so by June 30, 2025. If the government extends the deadline, additional time may be available. If you do not opt ​​for UPS by June 30, 2025, you will remain in NPS.

Employees who retired before March 31, 2025, who have completed 10 years of service.

Can you go back to NPS?

The FAQs of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) state that once you opt for UPS, you cannot go back to NPS. This decision will be final.
