CBSE's big change! Now in 11th-12th, Science and Maths will be in two levels, students will get a new option for study.

CBSE will introduce Science and Maths subjects of 11th-12th at two levels, Basic and Advanced, from 2026-27. With this, students will be able to choose subjects according to their interests and career plans, and the burden of studies will also be reduced.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is now preparing to bring school education in the direction of the interest and career of the students. In this direction, CBSE is planning to implement Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects for 11th and 12th students at two levels Basic and Advanced. This change can be implemented from the year 2026-27.
What will be the benefit of this change?
This move of CBSE will bring relief to those students who want to join subjects like Science and Mathematics, but their interest or future plans are not in technical fields. Such students will now be able to study these subjects at an easy i.e. basic level, while students making careers in fields like engineering, medical or research can choose them at the advanced level.
Subjects will be studied as per the wish of the students
The aim of this plan of CBSE is to reduce the burden of studies on the students and give them the option to study in depth only those subjects in which they have interest or career plans. That is, now no student will study difficult subjects just because he has to take them under compulsion.
Such an experiment was done earlier in 10th
CBSE has done such an experiment earlier as well. Maths was introduced at two levels in class 10th, standard and basic. Students were given the option that if they do not want to take Maths in 11th-12th, then they can choose the basic level. This decision was responded positively by students and parents.
Now a new beginning will be made from 11th
CBSE plans to implement this change first in class 11th. However, its final launch will depend on the availability of new books from NCERT. At present, NCERT has released new books for some classes from class 1 to 7 and books for 9th and 11th can be ready by the end of this year.
Schools will also have to make preparations
If this plan is implemented, then schools will have to run basic and advanced level classes separately. For this, teachers will have to be trained to teach at both levels so that students can get equal facility in both options.
In line with NEP 2020 and NCFSE
This move of CBSE is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) and National Curriculum Framework (NCFSE). Its objective is to give better options to the students according to their learning speed, interest and career. With this, the education of the students will not be limited to just the degree, but will form the foundation of their dreams.
