CBSE Syllabus Change: CBSE has removed Triple Talaq, Sedition, and Section 377 from the Legal Studies syllabus of class 11th-12th and included new laws like BNS, BNSS, and BSA. The changes will be implemented from the 2026-27 session, which will provide students with the study of modern legal framework.

CBSE Syllabus Change: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make a big change in the Legal Studies syllabus of class 11th and 12th. Now students will be taught new laws and important judicial decisions instead of old laws of the colonial era. This will include major provisions of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS), Indian Civil Defense Code (BNSS) and Indian Evidence Act (BSA).

Triple Talaq, Sedition and Section 377 removed

Under this change, topics like triple talaq, sedition and Section 377 will be removed from the syllabus. The curriculum committee and governing body of CBSE approved this proposal in June. This change is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and will give students an understanding of the modern legal framework.

Impact of legal reforms of 2023-24

Under the legal reforms implemented in 2023-24, BNS, BNSS and BSA replaced the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the old Indian Evidence Act respectively. Now these changes are also being implemented in school level studies.

Historic decision on triple talaq

The Supreme Court's historic decision on triple talaq will now be recorded in the books as a 'study case' and not as applicable law. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court had declared triple talaq unconstitutional by majority, giving relief to millions of Muslim women.

New courses will be implemented from 2026-27

CBSE says that the subject of law studies was started five years ago, but now with time, extensive improvement is necessary in it. For this, an expert committee will be formed and if needed, a content development agency will also be appointed, so that updated books can be made available to the students by the 2026-27 session.
