Can the UIDAI access your bank balance via Aadhaar? Is your money safe?
The UIDAI uses Aadhaar solely for identity verification. Even though your Aadhaar number is linked to your bank account, the UIDAI cannot view your bank balance, the amount deposited, or details of your investments.
If you are concerned that sharing your Aadhaar number could lead to the disclosure of your bank account balance, this information is important for you. Nowadays, Aadhaar is used for opening bank accounts, completing KYC, and accessing various other services. This often raises the question: can the UIDAI—the organization that issues Aadhaar—also access your bank balance and financial information?
Addressing these misconceptions, the UIDAI has clarified that Aadhaar is used exclusively for identity verification. Consequently, no one can withdraw money from your bank account based solely on your Aadhaar number.
Does the UIDAI hold information about your bank balance?
According to the UIDAI, it only possesses the limited information provided at the time of Aadhaar enrollment or subsequent updates. This includes your name, date of birth, gender, photograph, and biometric data—specifically fingerprints and iris scans. Providing a mobile number and email ID is optional. Therefore, the UIDAI does not have access to information regarding your bank balance, shares, mutual funds, property, insurance, or health records.
What happens when you link your Aadhaar to a bank account?
When you use your Aadhaar for identity verification at a bank or any other institution, that entity sends an authentication request to the UIDAI. In response, the UIDAI simply confirms whether the identity verification was successful or not.
If an institution conducts an e-KYC process and the verification is successful, certain details—such as your name, address, and photograph—may be shared, in accordance with the established rules for this process. However, this process does not grant the UIDAI access to information regarding the funds in your bank account, your demat account, your investments, or your insurance policies.
Can a bank account be emptied using only an Aadhaar number?
According to the UIDAI, simply knowing an Aadhaar number does not allow anyone to access your bank account or withdraw money directly from it. This is because banking transactions may require additional security procedures, in accordance with the rules of the respective service.
