Ration Card Food Subsidy News: The Government of India is changing the method of distributing ration subsidies. Starting August 14, 2026, ration subsidies for beneficiaries in Chandigarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli will be transferred to their wallets via the 'Digital Rupee'. The objective of this scheme is to curb theft and the misuse of ration subsidies. This scheme is being implemented under the PMGKAY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana).
Under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, money is usually sent directly to bank accounts instead of providing physical rations. However, this money could previously be withdrawn as cash or used at shops. There were reports of beneficiaries using these funds to buy alcohol and other items instead of rations. Consequently, the government will now transfer ration funds into digital wallets.
How will the digital currency be used?
A key feature of this scheme is that the digital currency received in the wallet can *only* be used to purchase rations. Beneficiaries will be able to buy only grains like wheat and rice with this money; it cannot be used for mobile recharges, clothing, alcohol, or other items. Funds received via the Digital Rupee can only be utilized at government ration shops. Payments will be made by scanning the QR code displayed at the shops.
It is worth noting that the Digital Rupee was previously trialed in Puducherry and Gujarat; following successful trials there, it is now being implemented in Chandigarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
How will this wallet work?
To avail of the scheme's benefits, beneficiaries must download and activate the 'PNB Digital Rupee' app on their smartphones. Subsequently, they need to visit a nearby ration office or a designated camp to complete KYC and registration using the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar. Understand the 30-day timeframe
The funds credited to the wallet for rations will be valid for only 30 days. Beneficiaries must purchase rations using this amount within one month. If the purchase is not made within this stipulated period, the funds will automatically revert to the government's account.
Since the process involves digital payments, a record of every transaction will be maintained. This will enable the government to easily track which beneficiaries purchased rations and verify whether the subsidy was utilized correctly.
