Bike Taxi Update: You cannot directly operate a private bike with a white number plate as a bike taxi; you may first need to obtain commercial approval from the RTO. Here are the essential rules.

Bike Taxi Rule: Amid rising inflation, everyone wants to earn extra income alongside their regular job. Many people are currently earning money through services like Rapido. However, a common question arises: can one earn money by operating a private bike (with a white number plate) as a bike taxi? There is an ongoing dispute in the capital, Delhi, regarding private-plated bike taxis, and the auto union has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar today against this practice. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the necessary regulations beforehand.

Escalating dispute over bike taxis

The union is demanding that operating hours for bike taxis be fixed and that a ban be imposed on bike taxis with private number plates. The auto union has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar today regarding these demands. If you are also considering earning money using a white-plated bike, you should first understand the relevant rules.

What are the rules?

If you intend to operate a white-plated bike as a bike taxi, simply registering on an app is not enough. To use a private bike for commercial purposes, one must comply with the regulations set by the transport department. This requires converting your private bike (with a white number plate) into a commercial vehicle.

How to convert to commercial status

To convert your private bike into a commercial vehicle, you must apply to the RTO. You will need to visit the RTO and submit an application to change your bike’s category.

Steps to take if the bike is financed

If you purchased the bike on a loan or through financing, there are certain formalities to complete before converting it to the commercial category. You may first need to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the financier. The subsequent necessary procedures are carried out only after receiving approval from the finance company and the bank.

Will tax and permit fees apply?

Converting your private bike for commercial use may incur additional road tax and permit fees; however, please note that these costs and regulations vary by state. Once all formalities are completed, a new commercial Registration Certificate (RC) is issued for the bike, along with a yellow number plate. It is important to understand that merely obtaining a yellow number plate is not enough; you must also officially update the bike’s records to reflect its commercial status.

Understand insurance requirements

Since private bikes cannot be used for commercial earnings, you must update your insurance policy to cover commercial use. You will need to obtain valid Commercial Vehicle Insurance.

Vehicle inspection

After completing the necessary procedures and submitting the required documents, your vehicle undergoes an inspection. The RTO assesses whether the vehicle is suitable for commercial use. The process moves forward only if everything is found to be in order.

Required documents

PUC Certificate
Original bike RC
Aadhaar Card
PAN Card
No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the financier (for bikes under a loan)
Passport-sized photograph
Commercial insurance
Valid driving license

Understand Central Government regulations

The Central Government has issued guidelines for motor vehicle aggregators. However, simply registering with platforms like Ola, Uber, or Rapido does not automatically convert a private vehicle into a commercial one; the entire formal conversion process must be completed. Please keep in mind that these regulations may vary from state to state.
