Bus Fare Hike in Bihar: Starting June 1st, bus travel in Bihar is set to become slightly heavier on passengers' pockets. The state government has decided to increase bus fares by 10 to 15 percent. The Transport Department has already issued a notification regarding this decision. This fare revision comes after a long hiatus and will impact all categories of bus services—including ordinary, deluxe, and AC buses. The government states that revising the fares had become necessary in light of rising diesel prices, increased maintenance costs, and higher operational expenses. Consequently, passengers will now have to pay higher fares compared to previous rates.

**New Rates to Come into Effect from June 1st**

According to the notification issued by the Transport Department, the new fare rates will become effective starting June 1st. The government has revised the fares for all categories of buses. This move will have a direct impact on the millions of passengers traveling within the state. Officials have stated that the new rates were determined by taking current operational costs into consideration.

**How Much Have Ordinary Bus Fares Increased?**

Under the new fare structure, the rate for travel up to 50 kilometers in ordinary buses has been fixed at ₹1.54 per kilometer. Previously, this rate stood at ₹1.50 per kilometer. Additionally, the fare has been set at ₹1.71 per kilometer for journeys up to 100 kilometers, and ₹1.65 per kilometer for distances exceeding 300 kilometers.

**Impact on Deluxe and AC Bus Passengers as Well**

For deluxe buses, the fare for travel up to 50 kilometers has been fixed at ₹1.96 per kilometer. For journeys extending up to 100 kilometers, a rate of ₹1.94 per kilometer will apply. In the case of AC buses, the new fare for travel up to 50 kilometers has been set at ₹2.30 per kilometer. For journeys up to 100 kilometers, the fare will be charged at a rate of ₹2.28 per kilometer.

**Action to be Taken Against Overcharging**

The government has made it clear that no bus operator is permitted to charge fares exceeding the prescribed rates. The district administration and local officials have been directed to monitor the fare structure. If any bus operator is found charging an amount exceeding the prescribed fare, strict action will be taken against them.

**Fare Revision After Five Years**

According to reports, bus fares in Bihar had remained unchanged for the past five years. However, as per the regulations, fares are subject to review every five years. The government states that, in light of rising operational costs, a revision of fares has become necessary.
