The government is likely to present the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 on February 1 or 2 next month. The government may announce several schemes specifically targeting women in this budget. These schemes would provide women with greater access to credit (loans) and insurance through Jan Dhan accounts. According to the Economic Times, the government aims to ensure that everyone benefits from financial services and that grievance redressal mechanisms are improved. This includes addressing issues related to insurance claims.

The budget may include announcements of special credit cards, loans, and insurance plans for women. The government also plans to further expand schemes launched in the previous budget, such as rural credit scoring and financial assistance for first-time entrepreneurs. An official stated that several suggestions are being considered to help small businesses and self-help groups (SHGs) in rural areas meet their credit needs.

Dormant Accounts May Be Activated
An official said that the government is also considering expanding the scope of Jan Suraksha schemes and giving policyholders the option to choose higher insurance coverage. NITI Aayog is evaluating the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). The aim is to reactivate dormant accounts and encourage people to keep them active by enhancing insurance and credit facilities.

What is the Government's Plan?
Another official said that the goal is to achieve 100% coverage. They also mentioned that NITI Aayog believes that increasing access to credit through these accounts and addressing the lack of financial literacy is crucial. This will further strengthen India's digital economy. This is all part of a larger evaluation of the PMJDY scheme. The objective is to align the government's financial inclusion initiatives with the goal of making India a 'developed nation' by 2047.

Another official indicated that customer-centric initiatives may also be emphasized in the budget. This includes focusing on returning unclaimed funds and resolving insurance claim disputes through stronger regulatory oversight.
