Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has highlighted three important rules related to train ticket booking.

IRCTC has highlighted these rules after several social media reports, which claimed that booking tickets for persons with different surnames could lead to a fine of up to Rs 10,000 or a serious punishment like imprisonment of up to 3 years. However, IRCTC has termed such reports as baseless.

IRCTC said that the news going on social media about the ban on e-ticket booking due to different surnames is false and misleading. The concerned people should be stopped from spreading such false news. It is clarified that tickets from the IRCTC site are being booked as per the guidelines of the Railway Board and the necessary information is available in the public domain as follows:

Any person can book tickets on a personal user ID for his friends, family, and relatives.

In the case of Aadhaar-authenticated users, 12 tickets can be booked per month, which can go up to 24 tickets per month if even one passenger on the ticket is Aadhaar-authenticated.

Tickets booked on personal user ID are not for business sale and such an act is an offence under Section 143 of the Railways Act 1989.
