Bike Transport by Train: Many people who are moving to a new city or planning a long stay often wonder if they can transport their bike or scooter by train. Indian Railways allows passengers to transport two-wheelers. However, certain rules must be followed. Let's learn about these rules and the complete process.
How to transport a two-wheeler by train?
Indian Railways allows the transportation of bikes or scooters as luggage or parcels. However, this depends on whether the owner is travelling on the same train or not. When booked as luggage, the vehicle travels in the brake van of the same train as the passenger. As soon as the train reaches the destination station, the bike or scooter is handed over to the owner immediately.
If the owner is not traveling, the vehicle is booked as a parcel. In this case, it is transported by parcel van or goods train. Parcel delivery usually takes 1 to 7 days. This depends on the route availability and train schedule.
Documents required for booking
Some documents are required to transport a two-wheeler by train. The vehicle's registration certificate is required as proof of ownership. An identity card such as Aadhaar card, driving license, or voter ID is also necessary. If the vehicle is booked as luggage, the passenger must also show a confirmed train ticket.
Charges for transporting a bike or scooter
The cost of transporting a two-wheeler depends on the distance, weight, and type of train. In most cases, the booking charge is between ₹300 and ₹3000. This also includes packing charges, which are usually between ₹100 and ₹500. Along with this, the insurance charge is approximately 1% of the vehicle's declared value.
Please note that for luggage booking, passengers must arrive at the station at least 3 hours before the train's departure to complete the paperwork and inspection. For parcel booking, the vehicle must be brought to the parcel office during its working hours.
