RBI 2000 Rs Note Update: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Thursday that 97.76 percent of the demonetized Rs 2000 notes have returned to the banking system. The Central Bank said that only Rs 7,961 crore of notes are currently with the public. RBI said in the statement that the withdrawal of Rs 2000 note was announced on May 19, 2023. At the end of the day, the value of Rs 2000 notes present in the market was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. Now on April 30, 2024, only Rs 7,961 crore worth notes are in the market.
"Thus, 97.76 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes have been returned," the bank said.
Notes can still be exchanged?
However, the Rs 2000 note is valid. People can deposit Rs 2000 notes or exchange them for other notes at 19 RBI offices across the country. People can also send Rs 2000 notes through Indian Post to any office of RBI and deposit the equivalent amount in their bank accounts.
Rs 2000 notes were issued after the RBI demonetized Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes in November 2016.
Notes can be changed till October 7
According to RBI, the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation at the time of the announcement of the withdrawal of notes was Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023. Now on April 30, 2024, only Rs 7,961 crore worth notes are in the market. Rs 2000 notes were asked to be exchanged or deposited in bank accounts by 30 September 2023. Later the deadline was extended till October 7, 2023.
Where can you exchange the Rs 2000 note?
You can send bank notes of Rs 2000 through India Post to any post office or any RBI office in the country, the value of which will be credited to your bank account. 19 RBI offices having bank note deposit/exchange - Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
