The Government of India is preparing to sell its stakes in four public sector banks, including Punjab & Sind Bank. Following this, 25% of the banks' shares will be held by the general public. The execution of this sale will depend entirely on market conditions.

The government plans to reduce its stake in Central Bank of India, UCO Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank to 75%. According to the regulations set by the market regulator, SEBI, it is mandatory for companies listed on the stock exchange to have at least 25% of their equity held by the general public. Since the government currently holds a larger stake in these banks, it will sell a portion of its holdings through an 'Offer for Sale' (OFS) to comply with the regulator's 25% minimum public shareholding requirement. Additionally, the banks themselves may also raise funds from the market.

1. Central Bank of India

The government holds approximately an 81.19% stake in Central Bank of India Limited. As per SEBI regulations, the government can retain a maximum stake of 75%; therefore, it needs to sell about 6.2% of its stake to bring it down to the 75% threshold. Both institutional and retail investors can participate in an OFS, whereas a QIP (Qualified Institutional Placement) by the bank would be restricted to institutional buyers only.

2. UCO Bank

The government's stake in UCO Bank stands at approximately 90.95%. Consequently, it needs to sell about 16% of its stake. It is expected that this stake will be divested through both an 'Offer for Sale' (OFS) and a 'Qualified Institutional Placement' (QIP).

3. Punjab & Sind Bank

The government holds an approximately 93.85% stake in Punjab & Sind Bank and needs to divest about 19% of its holding. On Friday, shares of Punjab & Sind Bank were trading at Rs 18.21, which is 10.52% lower than the previous closing price of Rs 20.35. In the last trading session, the stock opened at Rs 20.37, reached a high of Rs 20.39, and touched a low of Rs 19.61 before closing. Currently, the company’s market capitalization stands at Rs 12,949 crore.

4. Indian Overseas Bank

The government holds a 92.44% stake in Indian Overseas Bank. In compliance with SEBI’s minimum public shareholding norms, the government is required to reduce its stake in the bank by approximately 17.44%.
