Big news for pensioners: BPS demands release of DA, DR, and arrears

Central government pensioners are eagerly awaiting an increase in their Dearness Relief (DR). In this regard, the Bharat Pensioners Samaj (BPS) has written to the Cabinet Secretary, demanding the release of Dearness Allowance (DA), Dearness Relief (DR), and outstanding arrears.

For retirees, a pension is often the sole means of covering essential post-retirement expenses. Consequently, an increase in Dearness Relief (DR) is crucial. Central government pensioners are currently awaiting such an increase, and a letter addressing this has been submitted to the Cabinet Secretary.

The Bharat Pensioners Samaj (BPS) has requested the Cabinet Secretary to expedite the release of DA, DR, and any withheld or pending payments. With major festivals like Diwali and Chhath approaching—a period when expenses typically rise—it was anticipated that the government might announce revised rates.

What has been demanded?

On October 22 (today), the General Secretary of the BPS urged the Cabinet Secretary to consult with the Department of Pension & Pensioners' Welfare (DoPWW) and the Department of Expenditure (DoE) under the Ministry of Finance regarding this matter. The key question now is: by how much might the DR be increased, and will the government make an official announcement?

What are the benefits of an increase?

If the government increases the DR by 3 percent, the current rate of 60 percent would rise to 63 percent. This would directly benefit pensioners by increasing their monthly pension payouts. For instance, if an individual receives a basic pension of ₹30,000, they could receive an additional ₹900 per month. In other words, you will receive additional financial support to help cover your expenses. You will also be better equipped to manage costs incurred during the festive season.

What could the increase be?

Notably, following the last revision approved on April 18, 2026, the Dearness Relief (DR) was raised from 58% to 60%. The current rate remains at 60%. However, there is a strong expectation of a 3% increase in the DR for pensioners. If this increase is implemented, the DR will rise from 60% to 63%. It is important to note that the new DR rate will be effective from July 1, 2026. This rate will be determined based on inflation data covering the period from July 2025 to June 2026.

Crucially, should the government announce an increase, pensioners may receive not only the enhanced amount but also any outstanding payments—or "arrears"—for previous months. In short, pensioners must await an official government announcement regarding both the new rate and the disbursement of any pending dues.
