Big news for millions of LPG customers: This gas cylinder rule changes from October 1
To continue receiving the government subsidy on LPG, Aadhaar-based identification and biometric verification have been made mandatory starting October 1, 2026. Here is what you need to do.
There is important news for millions of domestic LPG customers across the country. If you use domestic gas cylinders and avail of the government's LPG subsidy, you must verify your identity using Aadhaar. The government has clarified that from October 1, 2026, Aadhaar-based identity verification will be mandatory to purchase LPG cylinders at subsidized rates.
Simply put, the government wants to ensure that the person in whose name the LPG connection is registered is the one actually using it, and that the subsidy benefits reach the intended recipient.
What changes from October 1?
LPG customers who had not yet verified their identity via Aadhaar were previously given time to do so. The government had initially set a deadline of June 30, 2026, but later extended it to provide relief to customers.
The new rule will now come into effect on October 1, 2026.
If you wish to avail of the LPG subsidy and have not yet verified your identity using Aadhaar, you must complete this process. Customers whose identities have already been verified via Aadhaar do not need to undergo the process again.
What does Aadhaar-based identity verification mean?
There is no need to be alarmed by the term 'biometric Aadhaar verification.' It simply means your identity will be confirmed using Aadhaar. This involves verifying your identity against your Aadhaar number and, if necessary, confirming it through fingerprints (biometrics). Essentially, the government wants to ensure that the LPG connection and its associated benefits are reaching the right person.
How many people have been verified?
According to the government, Aadhaar-based biometric verification for 27.43 crore (274.3 million) active domestic LPG consumers had been completed by September 19, 2026. This accounts for approximately 89.9% of all active domestic LPG consumers. In other words, while the process has been completed for about 90% of LPG customers, there are still some who have yet to complete this step.
Will LPG cylinder supplies stop if identity verification isn't done?
This is a crucial point. No, the supply of LPG will not be completely cut off; however, if you have not verified your identity using Aadhaar, you might face difficulties in purchasing LPG cylinders at subsidized rates. Such customers may have to buy LPG at market rates.
According to the government, options for 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders may also be available for such customers, depending on need and availability. Essentially, the issue is not about the discontinuation of LPG cylinder supplies, but rather about availing the benefit of subsidized prices.
Identity verification can be done from the comfort of your home
LPG customers do not need to make repeated visits to the gas agency for this purpose. The government and oil companies have provided several options.
First method: At the time of cylinder delivery
When the LPG cylinder arrives at your home, identity verification can be completed on the spot using the delivery person's mobile app.
Second method: By visiting the gas agency
You can also verify your identity using Aadhaar by visiting your LPG distributor agency—that is, the gas showroom.
Third method: Via mobile app
Oil companies have also made this facility available through their respective apps.
Indane customers: IndianOil ONE app
Bharatgas customers: Hello BPCL app
HP Gas customers: HP Pay app
In short, customers can choose either the online or offline method based on their convenience.
Why is the government requiring identity verification via Aadhaar?
The government states that a subsidy is provided on domestic LPG, and it is essential that these funds reach the genuine beneficiaries. The objective of the LPG subsidy is to provide relief to the domestic consumers whom the government intends to support under this scheme. For this reason, the government is verifying the identities of customers availing LPG connections and subsidies by linking them with Aadhaar.
How much subsidy is being provided on LPG?
If you purchase domestic LPG cylinders and avail the subsidy benefit, make sure to check your identity verification status before October 1st. If your identity has not yet been verified, you can complete the process using any of the following methods:
At the time of cylinder delivery
By visiting the LPG gas agency
Through the mobile app of the respective oil company
Please note that if identity verification via Aadhaar has already been completed, there is no need to do it again. For any assistance or information, LPG customers can contact the toll-free number 1800-2333-555.
