Big disclosure on cyber fraud in Delhi: Rs 1400 crores were stolen in last 4.5 years, government's efforts failed..

The net of cyber thugs is continuously expanding in Delhi. Statistics show that in the last four and a half years, online criminals have grabbed about Rs 14 billion from people's bank accounts. According to the report presented in Parliament, while the figure of cyber fraud was around Rs 2 billion in 2023, it increased to more than Rs 8 billion in 2024.
Shocking figures presented in Parliament
Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai shared these shocking figures in Parliament last week. Cyber experts say that the police are neither able to catch the big criminals nor are they able to recover the stolen money properly.
However, the Delhi Police claims that the recovery rate is now improving. After the instructions of the Home Ministry, this rate is likely to reach 20 to 25 percent this year.
Increase in cyber police stations, but shortage of staff
In the year 2021, the then Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana opened cyber police stations in all 15 districts. Gradually, the number of resources and staff was increased, and the investigation teams were also trained. Despite this, due to a lack of police force, immediate action could not be taken on all the cases.
In the year 2025, till June, 184 cases were registered in Delhi, and about Rs 71 crore was defrauded in them. Experts say that when cybercrime is increasing rapidly, the registration of so few cases raises questions.
New steps to prevent cyber fraud
In June 2025, Home Minister Amit Shah launched the facility of e-Zero FIR for cybercrime victims in Delhi. Now the complaints lodged on the National Cyber Crime Portal or Helpline Number 1930 are directly converted into e-Zero FIR and sent to the concerned police station for further action. If the victim wants, he can convert it into a regular FIR within 3 days.
