Beware of Cyber Fraud in the Name of the Census: One Mistake Could Empty Your Bank Account
During the census, cyber fraudsters are targeting people through fake websites, OTPs, and malicious links. Learn how to identify such scams and what precautions to take to keep yourself safe.
As the nationwide census process gets underway, the activity of cybercriminals has also surged. Fraudsters are now exploiting this government initiative—aimed at collecting data on the general public—for their own illicit gain. Numerous cases have surfaced where individuals are being targeted with fraudulent calls, links, and websites under the guise of the census. In such a scenario, even a minor lapse in judgment could result in significant financial loss.
The Web of Fake Websites and Fraudulent Portals
Cyber fraudsters typically begin by creating fake portals that closely mimic official government websites. The design of these websites appears so authentic that the average user can easily be deceived. The moment you enter your personal information into these sites, your details are transmitted directly to the fraudsters, thereby significantly increasing the risk of banking fraud.
Fraud via OTPs and Phone Calls
Many individuals are receiving phone calls informing them that verification is mandatory for the census and that they must share an OTP to complete the process. Please note: the census procedure never requires an OTP. If anyone makes such a request, recognize it immediately as an attempted scam.
Banking Details and QR Code Scams
The census is strictly for collecting information related to households and population demographics; it has absolutely no connection to banking details. If anyone asks you for your bank account number, card details, or requests that you scan a QR code, refuse immediately. In such instances, your entire life savings could be at risk.
Steer Clear of Malicious Links
You may receive links via SMS or WhatsApp on your phone, ostensibly for the purpose of filling out census forms. Clicking on these links could result in your phone being hacked or your personal data being stolen. Always maintain a safe distance from such links and never trust or click on any unfamiliar URL.
How to Keep Yourself Safe?
The government has explicitly clarified that, during the census process, no official will ever ask you for an OTP, money, or your banking details. Additionally, to verify the credibility of any website, it is essential that its domain ends with “.gov.in”.
A little caution and accurate information can protect you from such cyber traps.
