Beware! Cyber fraud is out of control in India, ₹22,845 crores defrauded in 2024, know how to stay safe.

In 2024, ₹22,845 crores were defrauded in India due to cyber fraud, registering an increase of 206% and the government has taken several steps for security.

Cybercrime is becoming unbridled in India. According to the data recently released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, there has been a tremendous increase in cases of cyber fraud across the country in the year 2024. While in 2023, Rs 7,465 crores were defrauded due to cybercrime, in 2024 this figure reached ₹22,845 crores with a jump of 206%.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar told the Lok Sabha that a total of 36.40 lakh financial fraud complaints have been registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) in 2024. This figure is much higher than the 24.4 lakh cases registered in 2023.

Increasing crime, scary figures

According to the minister, 22.7 lakh cyber crime complaints were registered in 2024, while in 2023 this number was 15.9 lakh. That is, there has been an increase of 42% in cyber crime in a year, which is a matter of concern for people across the country.

The government saved money of many people

The government has taken several steps to deal with this challenge. With the help of CFCFRMS, an amount of about ₹ 5,489 crore has been saved from fraud on the basis of 17.8 lakh complaints so far.

Apart from this, on the basis of police reports, the central government has blocked more than 9.42 lakh SIM cards and 2,63,348 mobile IMEIs. At the same time, with the help of Pratibimb module, 10,599 cyber criminals have been arrested so far.

How to avoid cyber fraud

The security measures suggested by cyber experts and the government are as follows:

-Be cautious of suspicious links, emails and calls

-Use strong passwords and turn on 2-factor authentication

-Open only secure websites (https)

-Do not share your personal information with anyone

-Keep your mobile and computer software updated regularly

-Do not do sensitive activities like login or banking from public Wi-Fi
