Bengal DA Hike: Providing major relief to state employees and pensioners, the West Bengal government has announced a 20% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA). Find out when the benefits of the increased rates will take effect.

West Bengal DA Hike: Every government employee keeps a close watch on DA (Dearness Allowance). Since it is a crucial component of their salary, employees eagerly await any increase in it. Amidst this, the West Bengal government has offered significant relief to its employees and pensioners by announcing a 20% hike in DA. Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta announced this decision today, June 22, 2026, while presenting the state budget. This move is set to benefit lakhs of employees and pensioners.

What will the DA be after the hike?

  • Following this decision, the DA received by employees will rise from 18% to 38%.
  • Additionally, pensioners will benefit from a 20% increase in Dearness Relief (DR).

When will the benefits of the increased rates begin?

  • According to the government, the new rates will come into effect on October 1, 2026.
  • This means the benefit of the increased DA will be reflected in employees' salaries starting from October.
  • Similarly, the benefit of the increased DR will be visible in pensioners' pensions from the same date.
  • Note that this hike applies to state government employees, employees of semi-government institutions, and pensioners.

Why do state employees still lag behind central employees?

  • After the 20% hike, the DA for West Bengal employees will reach 38%.
  • However, they will still remain significantly behind central government employees.
  • Currently, central government employees receive a DA of 60%.
  • It is evident that even after the hike, there will be a 22% gap between the DA of West Bengal employees and that of central government employees.

Why is there such a difference?

  • The primary reason for this disparity lies in the difference between their respective salary structures. Central government employees receive Dearness Allowance (DA) based on the 7th Pay Commission.
  • In contrast, the salaries and allowances of West Bengal government employees are determined under the state government's ROPA 2019 rules.
  • Additionally, the central government makes decisions regarding DA hikes every year in January and July.
  • On the other hand, DA hikes by the state government are smaller and take longer to implement.
  • This is the reason for the significant gap observed between the DA of central and state government employees.
  • Now, following this decision, employees are looking forward to October, as they will receive the benefits of the increased Dearness Allowance.
