Banks to Open on Sunday: Banks to remain open on Sunday, September 27; RBI's major decision amidst the strike..
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has permitted banks to keep their branches, offices, ATM-linked branches, and currency chests open on Sunday, September 27, 2026. This decision has been taken with the convenience of customers in mind.
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30. Before this, holidays were scheduled for Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27. Had the banks remained closed on Sunday as well, customers would have been deprived of banking services for an extended period.
**RBI Writes to Banks**
In a letter to the Indian Banks' Association, the RBI clearly stated that to ensure the public's essential banking needs are not adversely affected, bank branches and currency chests may remain fully operational on September 27. Banks have been instructed to make these arrangements while complying with legal provisions. A separate list of currency chests belonging to private sector and foreign banks has also been provided.
**Why This Emergency Decision Was Necessary**
Banks are set to remain closed from September 28 to 30 due to the UFBU's three-day strike. Combined with the preceding two-day holiday, there was a risk that customers would be without banking services for nearly five days. Keeping this in view, the RBI granted permission to open banks on Sunday to minimize inconvenience to the public. Customers are advised to complete essential tasks—such as cash withdrawals, deposits, or other transactions—on September 27, as banks may remain closed for the following three days.
