Nowadays, people commonly transfer money online; however, cheques are still used for large transactions. You often carry a chequebook for significant dealings. Sometimes, you might pre-sign cheques; if your chequebook is lost or stolen in such a situation, you should not overlook the matter.

If it falls into the wrong hands, it could lead to serious trouble for you, and you could even become entangled in a criminal case. A signed cheque could result in your account being drained.

**The First Step to Take**
If you lose a signed cheque, call your bank immediately. Inform them of the situation and place a 'stop payment' order on the cheque; this ensures that no payment can be processed using that cheque. Additionally, submit a written application to the bank. You may also choose to transfer the funds from your account to another one. Visit your nearest police station to file an FIR regarding the lost cheque and keep a copy of it. Having a record of the loss protects you from being implicated in any criminal matters should the cheque be misused.

If your entire chequebook goes missing, notify the bank immediately and have the entire series of cheques blocked.

Once these steps are taken, you can apply for a new chequebook, which the bank will issue for your account.

For your information: never leave cheques pre-signed. Sign them only at the time of the actual transaction. Furthermore, always keep your chequebook in a secure place.
