Bank Holiday on August 17: Today marks the festival of Nag Panchami. Many people are wondering whether there is a bank holiday for this occasion. If you need to visit a bank today to complete urgent work, you might be concerned about whether the branch will be closed. There is considerable uncertainty regarding whether today is a bank holiday due to Nag Panchami or if banking operations will continue as usual.

If you are planning to visit a bank today, find out first whether banks are open or closed on August 17, 2026, and on which days and in which locations they will remain closed during the week of August 17–23.

Are banks open or closed today, August 17?
There is no nationwide bank holiday on Monday, August 17, 2026. According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday list for August 2026, banks will remain open as usual today. This means you can visit a bank branch today if you have urgent business to attend to.

However, bank holidays can vary by state and region; a branch might be closed if there is a local holiday in a specific state or city. That said, banks across the country are not closed on August 17 due to Nag Panchami.

When will banks remain closed between August 17 and August 23?
According to the RBI holiday calendar, the next bank holiday this week falls on August 19. Subsequently, banks will also remain closed due to the fourth Saturday and Sunday of the month.

August 19, Wednesday: Banks will remain closed in Agartala. There is a bank holiday on this day to mark the birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur.
August 22, Saturday: Banks across the country will remain closed. Since August 22 is the fourth Saturday of the month, all bank branches will be closed.
August 23, Sunday: Banks across the country will remain closed. Sundays are weekly holidays for banks.
Accordingly, banks will remain open as usual in most parts of the country on August 17, 18, 20, and 21.

Will online banking work if the branch is closed?
Most digital banking services remain available even when bank branches are closed. You can make payments, transfer money, and perform other banking tasks via internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, and ATMs.

NEFT and RTGS facilities also remain available during bank holidays. In other words, a branch holiday does not mean your digital banking services will stop; you can continue using them without interruption.

Check the holiday list before visiting the bank
If you need to visit a specific branch for any work, be sure to check the RBI holiday list for your state and city beforehand. This will let you know whether banks in your area are open on that day, saving you from wasting time on an unnecessary trip to the branch.
