Bank Holiday on May 27: Banks to Remain Closed in Many States on Wednesday, RBI Issues Holiday Notice
People planning to visit bank branches on Wednesday, May 27, should first check the latest holiday schedule issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). After bank closures in some states on May 26 due to the birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, banks in several parts of the country will again remain closed on May 27 because of Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.
Although banking services will not be suspended nationwide, branches in many states are expected to remain shut on Wednesday under the RBI holiday calendar.
Why Are Banks Closed on May 27?
Banks in several states will remain closed on May 27, 2026, on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, also known as:
- Bakrid
- Eid-ul-Zuha
- Eid-ul-Adha
The festival is one of the most important religious occasions for the Muslim community and commemorates the spirit of sacrifice associated with Hazrat Ibrahim.
On this day, people gather for prayers, religious observances, and family celebrations, due to which state governments and banking authorities have declared holidays in many regions.
States Where Banks Will Remain Closed
According to the RBI holiday list, bank branches are expected to remain closed in multiple locations, including:
- Delhi
- Uttar Pradesh
- Kerala
- Assam
- Bihar
- Madhya Pradesh
- Chhattisgarh
- Uttarakhand
- Himachal Pradesh
- Manipur
- Andhra Pradesh
- Jammu and Kashmir
Bank branches in cities such as Kolkata, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Imphal, Srinagar, Kochi, and Guwahati are also expected to remain closed.
However, banking operations will continue normally in some other states where the holiday is not officially observed on May 27.
Bakrid Holiday Dates Differ Across States
This year, there has been some confusion regarding whether Bakrid-related bank holidays would fall on May 27 or May 28.
Because of moon sighting and regional administrative decisions:
- Some states will observe the holiday on May 27
- Others will keep banks closed on May 28 instead
- Certain regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, may observe closures on both days
As a result, customers are advised to check local holiday schedules before visiting branches.
Banks Were Already Closed in Tripura on May 26
On Tuesday, May 26, banks remained closed in Tripura due to the birth anniversary of celebrated poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Known as the “Rebel Poet,” Nazrul played a major role in Bengali literature and used his writings to speak against injustice, discrimination, and oppression.
Digital Banking Services Will Continue
Even though physical bank branches may remain shut during holidays, digital banking services will continue functioning normally.
Customers will still be able to use:
- UPI payments
- Mobile banking apps
- Internet banking
- ATM services
- NEFT and RTGS online transfers
This means most daily financial activities can still be completed without visiting a branch physically.
Upcoming Bank Closures in May
Apart from Eid-related holidays, banks across India will also remain closed on:
- May 31, 2026 — Sunday weekly holiday
Customers with important banking work such as cheque deposits, cash withdrawals, KYC updates, or document verification are advised to complete their tasks in advance to avoid inconvenience.
RBI Holiday Calendar Includes Regional Festivals
The RBI prepares bank holiday schedules based on:
- National holidays
- Religious festivals
- State-specific events
- Regional observances
Because of this, bank holidays can vary significantly from one state to another.
Financial experts advise customers to regularly check official holiday calendars before planning branch visits, especially during festival seasons when regional closures may differ across India.
