Reasons for the holiday
In Assam, the birth anniversary of the saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardev is celebrated on September 21. He played a pivotal role in promoting the 'Ekasarana Nama Dharma' devotional tradition in the state. Various religious and cultural events are organized across Assam on this occasion. Meanwhile, in Kerala, September 21 marks the 'Samadhi Day' of the social reformer and spiritual guru Sree Narayana Guru. He raised his voice against social discrimination and propagated the message of equality. His Samadhi (final resting place) is located at the Sivagiri Mutt in Varkala, Kerala, and this day is observed in his memory.
