Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal: The Ayushman Bharat scheme has officially launched in West Bengal. Under this initiative, every eligible family will now receive free and cashless medical treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh annually at both government and private hospitals.

Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal: A significant shift has been witnessed in the politics and healthcare landscape of West Bengal. The state's new BJP government has officially announced the implementation of the Central Government's flagship health scheme—'Ayushman Bharat' (AB-PMJAY)—within Bengal. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari gave his final approval to this initiative during his very first cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed this decision, hailing it as a tangible benefit of a 'Double Engine Government.'

What is Ayushman Bharat, and what does it offer you?

Ayushman Bharat stands as the world's largest government-funded health insurance scheme. Under this program, eligible families are entitled to cashless medical treatment—meaning no upfront payment is required—worth up to ₹5 lakh every year. These funds can be utilized when a family member is admitted to either a government hospital or a private hospital empanelled under the scheme. The most significant advantage of this initiative is that, in the event of a critical illness, poor families will no longer be forced to incur debt to cover medical expenses.

Who is eligible to benefit from this scheme?

Following the implementation of this scheme in Bengal, the eligibility criteria will strictly adhere to the parameters established by the Central Government:

Poor Families: Those whose names appear in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data.
Disadvantaged Sections: Individuals who are economically vulnerable and meet the specific criteria defined by the government.
A Special Gift for the Elderly: All senior citizens aged 70 years or above will be entitled to the benefits of this scheme, regardless of their income level.
Annual Assistance: Every eligible family will receive health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year.

What is the process for obtaining the card?

The procedure for availing the benefits of this scheme has been designed to be extremely simple. Residents of Bengal can verify their eligibility and apply for their cards through the following methods:

Automatic Inclusion List: Individuals whose names are already recorded in the SECC data are automatically included in the beneficiary list; they do not need to submit a separate application. Aadhaar Card is Mandatory: To establish their identity, it is mandatory for a beneficiary to possess verification linked to their Aadhaar card number.
Assistance at Hospitals: Eligibility can be verified by visiting hospitals affiliated with the scheme or by visiting government kiosks.
Ayushman Card: Upon successful verification, an ‘Ayushman Card’ will be issued; by presenting this card, beneficiaries can avail of free medical treatment at hospitals.

Why is this change significant for Bengal?

Until now, Bengal operated its own state-specific health scheme; however, with the introduction of Ayushman Bharat, the people of Bengal can now seek medical treatment at any major listed hospital across the country—even outside the state. The government's objective is to ensure that superior healthcare facilities reach every needy individual, without any discrimination. The final list of beneficiaries is set to be released at the state level very soon.
