Australia's prestigious Victoria University has received official approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to open a campus in India. This campus will be located in Gurugram, within the Delhi-NCR region. With this approval, the university can now launch its academic programs in India. This announcement is considered a significant step towards educational cooperation between India and Australia.
Approval Granted During PM Modi's Visit
News of this approval emerged while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting Australia. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the decision during the India-Australia Annual Summit held in Melbourne. On this occasion, India's High Commissioner to Australia, Nagesh Singh, handed over the approval letter to Victoria University officials.
What Courses Will Be Offered?
Several popular and industry-relevant courses will be introduced for students at the Gurugram campus. These will include undergraduate and postgraduate programs such as Business, Data Science, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Global MBA, and Master of Applied Information Technology. Students completing these courses will receive an Australian-accredited degree.
Details Provided by the University
The university states that it aims to provide students studying here with the same academic experience available at its Australian campuses. To achieve this, the university will conduct classes using its unique 'Block Model.' Under this model, students focus on only one subject at a time. Emphasis will be placed on enhancing student understanding and performance through small batch sizes, regular assessments, and practical learning arrangements.
What Are the Benefits for Students?
The university has also announced that students studying in India will have future opportunities for semester exchanges, transfers, and higher education at the Melbourne campus. Additionally, eligible students will be awarded merit-based scholarships of up to ₹3 lakh annually. Professor Karen Dodd, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University’s India branch, stated that the university is now ready to welcome its first batch following the receipt of necessary approvals. She noted that the institution aims to provide an environment where students can build successful careers by equipping themselves with new technologies, an understanding of industry needs, and essential professional skills.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Victoria University India, mentioned that preparations for the campus have been underway for several months. Facilities such as modern classrooms, student support services, industry linkages, and career guidance will be provided to ensure students enjoy an experience comparable to that of an Australian university right here in India. With a history spanning approximately 110 years, Victoria University currently has around 52,000 students from across the globe. The launch of the campus in India is expected to further strengthen educational, research, and academic collaboration between the two nations. This move also advances the objective of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes making world-class higher education available within India.
