Attention passengers! Several trains cancelled on these routes until January 9th. Check the list before leaving home.
Indian Railways IRCTC: The biting cold has slowed down train operations. Considering passenger safety, the Indian Railways has decided to cancel several MEMU and passenger services until January 9th. Please check your route before leaving home.
Indian Railways IRCTC: For Indian Railways, the lives of passengers are paramount, above any timetable. That's why the Tatanagar and Chakradharpur railway divisions have taken a short break from development and speed for the next three days. From January 7th to January 9th, 2026, the roar of train engines will be less frequent on the tracks. This decision was not made due to any technical fault, but to avoid a conflict between nature and man. The presence of wild elephants amidst dense fog has forced the railways to change their strategies.
The safety of humans and wildlife is paramount
The railway lines passing through the dense forests of the Chakradharpur division have become a favorite corridor for wild elephants these days. Reports of herds of elephants constantly crossing the tracks have put the railway administration on high alert. Security experts believe that due to low visibility caused by the fog, if a train suddenly encounters elephants, the consequences could be disastrous. To ensure the safety of passengers and to protect the elephants, the railways have considered temporarily canceling passenger and MEMU trains as the safest option.
These trains have been halted
For the next 72 hours, several important routes will remain silent. The major trains that have been cancelled include daily MEMU services like Chakradharpur-Tatanagar-Kharagpur (68010/09/06/11) and Tatanagar-Gua (68019/20). In addition, the Tatanagar-Rourkela (68043/44) and Jharsuguda-Hatia (18176/75) trains connecting Jharkhand and Odisha will also remain suspended. Local passenger services operating between Badampahar and Bangiriposi have also been directly affected, forcing local traders and commuters to look for alternative routes.
Take precautions before leaving home
While the railway's decision is entirely focused on safety, it has created difficulties for daily commuters, especially the middle class who rely on MEMU trains. The railways have clarified that this restriction is only until January 9th, and services will be restored as soon as the situation improves. The administration has appealed to passengers to check the current status of trains on railway inquiry or the official app before planning their journey, so that they do not face disappointment upon reaching the station.
