Attention Employees: Remove Incorrect PF Accounts Linked to Your UAN to Avoid Claim Delays
If an incorrect PF account is linked to your UAN, you can delink it online. On the EPFO portal, select the Member ID, state the reason, and submit a request to remove the incorrect account after verifying it via OTP. Make sure to check your PF records periodically.
If, while changing jobs or companies, you notice a PF account linked to your UAN that is unrelated to you, do not ignore it.
An incorrect Member ID can create confusion in your PF records and cause complications during future transfers or withdrawals. Fortunately, the EPFO provides an online facility to remove incorrectly linked Member IDs.
First, Check Your PF Details Linked to Your UAN
To identify an incorrect PF account, log in to the EPFO Unified Member Portal using your UAN and password. Then, navigate to 'Service Details' or 'Service History' to view all Member IDs linked to your UAN. Compare details such as the company name, tenure of employment, and Member ID against your actual employment records.
If the list contains a company or PF Member ID where you never worked, it can be considered an incorrect link. However, do not delink a PF account belonging to a genuine past employer simply because you no longer work there.
How to Delink an Incorrect Member ID
Once an incorrect account is identified, you can select the 'Delink' option available next to the relevant Member ID. You will then need to provide a reason for delinking on the portal. For instance, you could select a reason indicating that a company offered employment but you never actually started working there.
Finally, you must accept the required declaration and verify your identity using an Aadhaar-based OTP. The OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your UAN. Once the process is complete, the request is forwarded for further action.
What happens if PF contributions have already been deposited?
In April 2026, the EPFO expanded the scope of this facility. Now, requests for delinking can be made even for incorrect Member IDs where PF contributions have already been deposited by the employer. In such cases, the process may involve the employer or the concerned EPFO field office.
However, immediate delinking is not possible in every case. Member IDs associated with claims that have already been processed, settled, or are currently pending may be excluded from this facility under prescribed rules. Online requests are also subject to limitations in cases where the incorrect Member ID has more than six contributions recorded against it.
Keep documents safe
If issues arise during the online process, preserve records such as appointment letters, salary slips, PF statements, and correspondence with the employer. If needed, these documents can help substantiate the correct information before the EPFO or the employer. It is advisable to periodically check your service history linked to your UAN. It is particularly important, after changing jobs, to verify that the correct employer and Member ID are linked to your PF records.
