The government has implemented new rules to make the registration process for the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) easier and more secure. The Department of Posts issued an official notification stating that, effective October 1, 2025, old APY forms will no longer be accepted. Only the new, revised form will be valid for new registrations. This step has been taken in accordance with the guidelines of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) to improve and streamline the pension and related services provided to individuals under the scheme.

What is the Atal Pension Yojana?
The Atal Pension Yojana is a social security scheme of the Government of India, specifically designed for workers in the unorganized sector. Any Indian citizen between the ages of 18 and 40 can join this scheme. Under this scheme, members are entitled to receive a monthly pension upon reaching the age of 60, ranging from a minimum of ₹1,000 to a maximum of ₹5,000. The pension amount depends on the member's regular contributions. Its purpose is to provide financial security to poor and middle-class people in their old age.

What changes have occurred under the new rules?
Now, registrations for the new APY will only be accepted through a new form, which comes with certain new information. This form includes a mandatory FATCA/CRS (Foreign Taxation) declaration. This means that applicants' foreign nationality information will now be collected to ensure the scheme is limited to Indian citizens. Additionally, new APY accounts can only be opened through post offices, as these accounts are linked to postal savings accounts. No new registrations using the old form will be accepted after September 30, 2025.

Registration Eligibility Criteria
To join the Atal Pension Yojana, applicants must be between 18 and 40 years of age. Additionally, applicants must have a savings account with a bank or post office. Applicants must not be taxpayers. It is mandatory to provide their Aadhaar card and mobile number at the time of registration so that they can receive important scheme updates directly on their mobile phone.

Instructions to Post Offices and Bank Branches
The Department of Posts has instructed all post offices across the country to use only the newly revised APY form and to make the public aware of this change. Information about this change will also be posted on notice boards in all post offices to ensure everyone is aware of this new rule.
