Insurance is not available on railway tickets purchased offline. According to railway rules, accident insurance is only available to those who book tickets online.

Millions of passengers travel by Indian Railways every day. However, many are unaware of the railway regulations. One such rule is that passengers receive insurance on their tickets. But do you know whether this insurance is also available when purchasing railway tickets offline? Let us explain today whether insurance is not available on offline railway tickets and how much truth there is in this.

It is indeed true that insurance is not available on railway tickets purchased offline. According to railway rules, accident insurance is only available to those who book tickets online. However, those who purchase tickets at the ticket counter are completely excluded from this facility.

The issue of non-availability of insurance on offline tickets came to light during a petition in the Supreme Court.

Regarding this matter, a bench comprising Justices Hassanuddin Amanullah and K. Vinod Chandran stated that the Railways should focus primarily on the safety of railway lines and crossings.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court also directed the Railways to file a detailed affidavit on all these issues. The next hearing will be held on January 13, 2026.

During the hearing, the Court also raised the question of why only those with online tickets receive insurance coverage, while millions of people who still purchase tickets offline are deprived of this facility. The Court clearly stated that the Railways must answer why this discrimination exists.

The Court also stated that travel safety cannot be determined by how the ticket was purchased, and that ensuring passenger safety should be the Railways' responsibility.
