If you are planning to visit a bank around Diwali—whether to deposit cash, access a locker, or update your checkbook/passbook—please be aware that bank branches may remain closed in some locations during the festive season.

If you need to visit a bank today but are unsure whether it will be open or closed on the occasion of Dhanteras, rest assured: branches will be open everywhere today. Dhanteras is not listed as a bank holiday in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar for November 2026. Consequently, banks across the country will remain open on Friday, November 6. If you hold an account with banks such as State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, or Axis Bank, and are planning a visit, you may do so today; banking operations will continue as usual.

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is traditionally a time for purchasing gold, silver, jewelry, utensils, and other valuable items. It is also considered an auspicious day for making investments. Amidst festive shopping and ongoing preparations, many customers may require banking services for tasks such as cash deposits, check-related transactions, or other financial activities—making it essential for banks to remain open.

Upcoming Bank Holidays

November 7, 2026 (Chhoti Diwali/Saturday) – Banks will remain open. As this is the first Saturday of the month, it is a regular working day.

November 8, 2026 (Diwali/Sunday) – Banks will remain closed across the country due to the weekly holiday.

November 9, 10, and 11, 2026 (Govardhan Puja / Bhai Dooj) – Banks will remain closed on different days across several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

Rely on digital and online banking

Do not worry during the bank holidays, as digital and online banking services will remain available 24x7. You can conduct financial transactions using platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or your bank’s official mobile app. For larger amounts, you can use IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) or NEFT/RTGS, which operate around the clock, even on holidays. You can also withdraw cash from ATMs or deposit money directly into your account using a Cash Deposit Machine (CDM).
