In the last week of September, everyone was talking about Zoho Corporation's Arattai app, but within a month, its magic had faded. Now, it's out of the top 100 apps.

Until a few days ago, Zoho's Arattai app was being touted as a local alternative to WhatsApp. It had even become the most downloaded app on the Google Play Store, but now its magic is fading. Compared to WhatsApp, users are not liking it and it has now dropped out of the top 100 apps list on the Play Store. About a month ago, everyone was talking about the Arattai app, and a large number of people had created accounts on it.

Why did the Arattai app lag behind?

The Arattai app was launched in 2021, but it gained prominence only this year. Following a post by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, people discovered the app, and its user base rapidly grew. While it offers many features similar to WhatsApp, it failed to create lasting impact. Initially, its messages weren't end-to-end encrypted. Furthermore, the removal of users from WhatsApp posed a significant challenge for Arattai, which the company couldn't overcome. WhatsApp has been used for a long time, and for many, it has become the default choice for messaging and calling. Consequently, it became difficult for Arattai to maintain its top ranking.

Privacy Focus in Arattai

The Arattai app, made entirely in India, offers features like personal chat, group chat, voice notes, image and video sharing, just like WhatsApp. Now, it has also introduced end-to-end encryption for personal chats, and the company is preparing to add many more new features. Preparations are underway to integrate the Zoho Pay app, allowing users to use Arattai for payments in addition to chatting. Zoho, the developer, says that Arattai is privacy-conscious and will never monetize personal data.
