The Delhi government is set to introduce a new rule regarding subsidized electricity for the city's residents. Previously, residents received free or subsidized electricity automatically; under the new rule, however, they must explicitly declare their desire to avail of the subsidy—and do so annually. This move aims to alleviate the growing financial burden on the government. Failure to register each year will result in the discontinuation of the electricity subsidy.

Under the new regulations, consumers must actively opt for the electricity subsidy. While the option to choose existed previously, the new mandate requires annual registration. This change comes as the rising number of subsidy beneficiaries places an increasing financial strain on the government.

**How ​​to Register for Free Electricity**
The Delhi government is implementing a registration requirement for subsidized electricity—specifically, the scheme offering 200 units of free power. A dedicated website or portal will be launched for this purpose, where Delhi's electricity consumers must register annually. Residents will have the option to opt out of the subsidy, while those wishing to continue receiving it must register on the portal every year to confirm whether or not they require free electricity.

In Delhi, domestic consumers are exempt from paying bills for electricity consumption up to 200 units, as the government provides a full subsidy for this amount. For consumption between 201 and 400 units, the government offers a 50% subsidy. However, if consumption exceeds 400 units, the consumer is required to pay the full bill amount.

**Government Cuts Electricity Subsidy Fund**
The number of electricity consumers in Delhi is rising rapidly, causing the financial burden of the electricity subsidy to nearly double. The allocated amount for the electricity subsidy had reached ₹4,037.63 crore by February 2026. For the 2026-27 financial year, the government has set a budget of ₹3,500 crore for subsidized electricity. In other words, the electricity subsidy fund has been reduced.

It is reported that there are currently over 7.3 million (73 lakh) electricity consumers in Delhi, with domestic consumers accounting for more than 80 percent of the total.

The Kejriwal government introduced the option of subsidized electricity in 2022, requiring consumers to apply for it. Under the new rules, people will now have to opt for this facility every year.
