Concerns regarding cybersecurity have intensified following a potential data leak involving customers of the State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest public sector bank. However, the bank has clarified that the funds held in customers' accounts remain secure. The bank has begun notifying affected customers individually via email and WhatsApp, while also advising them to exercise caution when using digital banking services.

Data of 3,897 customers under scrutiny
According to the State Bank of India (SBI), an initial investigation into approximately 375,000 records found on the dark web revealed 3,897 records containing information related to customer identities. The bank has engaged cybersecurity experts to investigate the potential data breach.

Bank issues statement
In a statement released on the social media platform 'X', SBI stated: "Following our previous post regarding a recent cyber incident, the bank has individually notified all customers whose data may have been affected."
The bank further clarified, "We reiterate that your account balances and funds remain secure with us." It has advised customers to follow safe digital banking practices, never share OTPs, PINs, or passwords with anyone, and remain vigilant against suspicious calls, messages, and emails.

This statement follows a clarification issued earlier this week by India’s largest bank, confirming a data breach in which the information of 3,897 customers was published on the dark web.

Earlier in the week, the bank reported receiving an alert from its 'threat intelligence service provider,' the 'Defence Cyber Agency,' and 'CERT-In' regarding a potential leak of customer data.

What kind of information is suspected to have been leaked? The records uncovered during the investigation reportedly contain various types of personal information belonging to customers. This includes:

Customer names and registered mobile numbers
Dates of birth and email IDs
Home addresses and gender-related information
Details regarding bank branches and Customer IDs (CIF)
Certain information related to loans and lead records

Is your money safe?
SBI has assured customers that the funds deposited in their accounts are secure. According to the bank, this incident has not had any significant impact on its core banking operations, financial performance, or business continuity.
