Everyone touts the benefits of AI, but you should also be aware of how it's being misused. Recently, it was discovered that hackers in North Korea used the AI tool ChatGPT to attack targets in South Korea. Using AI, the hackers first created a fake South Korean military ID card and then used it for a phishing attack.

According to the cybersecurity firm Genians, hackers created a deepfake of a South Korean military ID card to send malicious emails. Phishing attacks using this ID card were difficult to detect.

The involvement of this hacker group
The North Korean hacker group Kimsuky is suspected of being involved in this phishing attack. This group was previously implicated in a cyberattack on South Korea. According to researchers, hackers created a deepfake of a South Korean military ID card to enhance the credibility of the phishing email.

These emails contained convincing AI images designed to install malware. Once installed, the malware allows hackers to steal all data from the device.

One of the emails came from an address ending in mli.kr, which was used to defraud people. This type of email address is used by the South Korean military. Attachments to the emails included compressed files and shortcut links (.lnk) that launched obfuscated scripts. These scripts then unpacked batch files capable of stealing information from the device.
