The Government of India is now going to take a big step to provide better facilities to the passengers at the airport. The government plans that the fees charged by airport operators from the passengers will now be linked to the level of services provided by them. That is, if the facilities at the airport are not good, then the operator will not be allowed to charge more, and if the service is very good, then they can get a discount to charge a little more as a reward.

According to ET's report, the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) is working on this plan. It regulates the fees and services at the major airports of the country. Let us know what this new system is and what benefits the passengers will get from it.

Till now, AERA used to take into account the operator's expenses, construction cost, non-aviation earnings, and other expenses to decide the fees to be charged at the airport. But now, along with this, it will also be seen what facility the passenger is getting.

If one has to wait for a long time for the bag at an airport, the trolley is not available, seating space is limited, or the toilets are not clean, then the operator will have to bear the loss. On the other hand, if all the facilities are provided on time and better, then the operator will also benefit from it.

How will service standards be decided?

AERA has set two types of criteria to measure service quality, namely objective and subjective. Objective criteria will include the time taken in security check, time of getting the bag, availability of trolley, and seating arrangement in the terminal. On the other hand, subjective criteria will include cleanliness of the terminal, ambiance, and environment. All these points will be monitored every month, and a report will be prepared.

Will passengers get a better experience?

Most of the big cities in India have only one major airport. In such a situation, passengers do not have any other option. For some time, complaints of passengers have increased that the services at the airport are getting worse while the charges collected from them are continuously increasing. If this new policy of the government is implemented properly, then passengers will definitely get the benefit. It is believed that after the implementation of this new system, there will be direct pressure on airport operators to improve their services every month, otherwise their earnings will be affected.
