According to the information, there were a total of 242 people on board this flight, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Air India Flight AI 171 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:10 pm for London's Gatwick Airport. This flight was being flown by Captain Sumit Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder.

As soon as the accident was reported, some teams of the fire brigade and the National Disaster Response Force were sent to the crash site.
