Google has added the multimodal capabilities of Lens technology to make its AI-based search feature, AI Mode, more powerful. With this new update, users will now be able to search using text as well as images, giving them a more rich and context-aware search experience. Google says that early users of AI Mode have received positive feedback for its clean interface, fast response time, and ability to understand complex and in-depth questions.

What is AI Mode?

AI Mode is an experimental and opt-in feature of Google Search Labs. It introduces search through an AI-based interface, in which users can ask new questions and explore topics in depth. Currently, this feature is available only to Google One AI Premium subscribers. According to Google, people are using AI Mode for exploratory and open-ended questions, as well as complex tasks such as comparing two products, finding "how to" guides, and trip planning.

What will change with photo and image support?

Users can now ask questions about a photo by clicking or uploading an image. The AI mode will then dig deep into the image and provide complete, detailed answers – including relevant links so users can learn more.

This integration is based on Google's custom-built Gemini model, which can recognize objects in an image as well as understand the entire scene – such as the relationships between objects, their material, color, shape, and arrangement.

How does it work?

While the Lens technology accurately identifies every element in an image, the AI mode goes a step further and automatically generates a variety of questions about that image. This process is called the "Query Fan-out Technique", which allows the AI mode to provide more depth and variety of information than traditional text-based search.
