The Union Tribal Ministry is soon going to launch the country's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) based translator named Adi Vani. Its objective is to preserve tribal languages ​​and empower tribal communities.

AI models like NLLB and Indic Trans-2 have been used in Adi Vani. Through this, real-time translation between Hindi-English and tribal languages ​​​​will be possible. It will have features like text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and OCR, which will allow manuscripts and oral traditions to be digitized.

This initiative has been developed by IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Raipur in collaboration with Tribal Research Institutes (TRI). Initially, translation of Santhali (Odisha), Bhili (Madhya Pradesh), Mundari (Jharkhand) and Gondi (Chhattisgarh) languages ​​​​will be possible in it. In the next phase, languages ​​​​like Kui and Garo will also be added.

According to the 2011 census, 461 languages ​​and 71 mother tongues are spoken by scheduled tribes in India. Of these, 81 languages ​​are endangered and 42 are critically endangered. Many languages ​​are on the verge of extinction due to lack of documentation and generational transmission.
