The Indian Army is one of the largest armies in the world. For information, let us tell you that the Indian Army currently consists of about 1.4 million active soldiers. In 2023, the Government of India made changes in the recruitment process of soldiers. Earlier, recruitment was done through rallies, but now it is done under the Agneepath scheme. Under the Agneepath scheme, the service period and criteria for soldiers have also changed. Let us know about this scheme and its requirements in detail.

What are the age criteria for Agneepath Yojana?

Initially, the age limit for soldiers to be recruited under the Agneepath scheme was fixed between 17.5 to 21 years. However, due to the recruitment halt during the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has temporarily increased this age limit to 23 years. Unlike other government jobs, there is no provision for age relaxation based on reservation in the Indian Army.

What is Agneepath Yojana?

The Agneepath scheme, also known as the Agniveer scheme, launched by the Government of India in 2023, changes the terms of service of soldiers. Previously, all soldiers recruited in the Indian Army were entitled to a pension after retirement. Under the Agneepath scheme, soldiers are recruited for a four-year term, after which 75% of them retire. Only 25% of the recruits will continue their full service in the Indian Army.

For example, if 100 soldiers are recruited under the Agneepath scheme, only 25 will be able to complete their full term, while the remaining 75 will retire after four years. These retired soldiers will receive a payment of around Rs 1.2 million (Rs 12 lakh).

How is recruitment done?

Recruitment under the Agneepath scheme involves both physical and written tests. The written test, which consists of multiple-choice questions, covers general knowledge, general science, reasoning, and mathematics. For General Duty and Tradesman posts, the online exam is scored out of 100 and candidates must score at least 35 marks to pass. The selection is based on merit considering the results of both physical and written exams.
