To protect the tribal language, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs is launching the beta version of 'Adi Vaani'. It is India's first AI-based tribal language translator. It has been developed under the Tribal Pride Year. This initiative can prove to be a game-changer in the perspective of language and education in tribal areas.
It is currently available on the Google Play Store. The iOS version is coming soon. And it can also be used through a web platform. Its purpose is to fill the gap in communication between tribal and non-tribal societies and to protect the endangered tribal languages with the help of AI technology.
What is Adi Vaani?
Adi Vaani is an AI-based translator tool that will form the foundation of a larger language model for tribal languages in the future. It includes both advanced technology and community participation, so that tribal languages and cultures can be protected and revived.
What is the purpose of Adi Vaani?
There are 461 languages of the Scheduled Tribes and 71 tribal mother tongues in India. Many of these languages are in danger. 81 languages are in a weak state. 42 languages are severely endangered. Many of these languages are in danger of extinction due to a lack of documentation and transmission from generation to generation. Adi Vani is the solution to this problem. It has been developed jointly by BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, and IIIT Nava Raipur under the leadership of IIT Delhi. Tribal research institutes of Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Meghalaya have also contributed to it.
It will be used here.
With the help of this tool, real-time translation can be done between Hindi/English and tribal languages. Interactive language education can be created for students and early learners. Digital preservation of folklore, oral traditions, and cultural heritage can be done. Digital literacy, health dialogue, and citizen participation will increase in tribal society. Information about government schemes and important speeches will be available. The beta version includes many languages, including Santhali (Odisha), Bhili (Madhya Pradesh), Mundari (Jharkhand) and Gondi (Chhattisgarh). Kui and Garo languages will be added in the next phase.
