Ration Card Update: There is no longer any need to make repeated trips to government offices to add your wife’s name to your ration card after marriage. You can now complete this entire process from the comfort of your home via an online portal. Read on to find out how.

Online Ration Card Update: In India, the ration card is a vital government document. It serves not only as proof of identity but also helps citizens access government-subsidized rations and avail the benefits of various government schemes. One of the most crucial tasks following a marriage is removing the new member’s name from her parental family’s ration card and subsequently adding it to her marital family’s ration card.

Many people perceive this process as overly complicated and end up making endless rounds of government offices, leading to significant inconvenience. However, in the era of ‘Digital India,’ you can now accomplish this task with ease. In this report, let us understand how you can complete this entire procedure right from your home.

Step 1: Removing the Name from the Parental Family’s Ration Card

After marriage, it is mandatory to first remove the wife’s name from her parental family’s ration card. To do this, one must visit the official website of the Food Department of the respective state and submit an online application.
Once the application is accepted, the department issues a certificate or receipt confirming that the name has been successfully removed from the old ration card. This specific document is subsequently used to facilitate the addition of the name to the marital family’s ration card.
Additionally, a copy of the wedding invitation card or the official marriage certificate must also be uploaded online as part of this process.

Required Documents

To add a wife’s name to her marital family’s ration card, certain essential documents must be submitted. This includes providing a marriage certificate or a letter duly verified by the Village Head (Gram Pradhan) or a Ward Councilor, serving as official proof of the marriage.
Furthermore, a scanned copy of the ‘surrender receipt’—confirming the removal of the name from the parental family’s ration card—must be submitted to validate that the name has indeed been delisted from the previous card.
Finally, a copy of the marital family’s existing ration card, along with the Aadhaar card of the Head of the Family (typically the mother-in-law or father-in-law), must also be provided. Additionally, an updated Aadhaar card for the wife is required, which must list her husband’s name and her new address at her in-laws’ residence.

Steps for Online Application on the Food Portal

  • First, visit the website of your state’s Food and Civil Supplies Department.
  • Next, navigate to the ‘Citizen Corner’ section and click on the option to add a new member’s name.
  • Then, enter the Ration Card number, the wife’s Aadhaar number, and all other necessary details.
  • Finally, upload all the required documents and submit the form.

The Final Verification Process

Once the online form has been submitted, the Food Department verifies the documents and the address provided.
If you are unable to submit the online application yourself, you may seek assistance from a nearby Jan Seva Kendra (Citizen Service Center) or a local Ration Dealer.
Upon completion of the verification process—typically within 15 to 30 days—the new name is added to the Ration Card, and the new digital Ration Card becomes available for download.
