A woman in the United States recently won the lottery with the help of artificial intelligence, raising the question of whether AI can truly make someone rich, or if it's all just luck. Many people use various calculations and methods to predict lottery numbers, but the results often don't turn out as expected. Consequently, some people have started purchasing tickets by asking AI for numbers. But will this method really work for everyone? Two incidents raise several questions.
Carrie Edwards, a resident of Virginia, won the jackpot in the Virginia Lottery Powerball draw on September 8th. She says the numbers she chose were obtained using ChatGPT. Interestingly, four of the first five numbers suggested by the AI were correct, as was the Powerball number.
This initially earned him a $50,000 prize, but when he took the Power Play option, the amount increased to $150,000, or approximately ₹1.32 crore. This win has led people to wonder whether AI technologies like ChatGPT can truly make someone a millionaire, or if it was just a coincidence.
On the other hand, a man named Wayne Williams from London had a completely different experience. He jokingly asked ChatGPT and DeepSeek for random numbers for the EuroMillions lottery. Both chatbots suggested the exact same numbers – 7, 14, 23, 35, 42, 3, and 9. He bought a ticket with these numbers, but luck ran out, and Wayne was left empty-handed.
Similarly, a medium user tried his luck in Germany's popular Lotto 6 aus 49 lottery using various AI tools like Google Colab, Gemini 2.0 Flash, Grok 3, ChatGPT 4o, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet. He spent approximately 14.90 euros (€1,350) and bought tickets using the numbers generated by these tools, but the result was unsuccessful.
These incidents make it clear that while AI-generated numbers can sometimes lead to winning the lottery, there's no guarantee. It's entirely a matter of luck, which no technology can completely control. AI can only provide predictions, but it's difficult to predict when luck will favor someone.
