Bamboo Cooling Zone: Bamboo cooling zones are being set up in Delhi to provide relief from heatwaves and scorching heat. Find out how they work, what facilities are available, and who will benefit the most.

Delhi Heatwave Cooling Zone Facility: In view of the intensifying heatwaves and scorching heat in Delhi, the government has launched a new relief initiative. ‘Bamboo cooling zones’ will now be set up in various parts of the capital, offering people a place to sit and find respite from the heat. Officials stated that this scheme is not limited to protection against high temperatures alone; it is also a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by changing weather patterns and climate change. These cooling zones will provide natural cooling without causing environmental harm.

What is a Bamboo Cooling Zone?

As the name suggests, these cooling zones are constructed using bamboo. The use of bamboo ensures a minimal environmental footprint and makes the structures durable. The aim is to provide relief to individuals who have to work outdoors in the scorching sun all day. Here, they can pause, rest, and find relief from the heat.

Where is this facility available?

Two cooling zones are already operational in Delhi—one in Bawana and the other in the Alipur area—where people are currently availing themselves of these facilities. Additionally, the government has initiated the process of setting up three new cooling zones. One of these is being constructed opposite the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

How do they provide relief from the heat?

These cooling zones are built using special technology. They feature walls made of Khas (vetiver) grass, which naturally helps cool the air. Furthermore, a misting system has been installed that releases fine water droplets into the air, thereby reducing the perceived intensity of the heat. Additionally, proper ventilation has been ensured to provide a refreshing atmosphere and a comfortable seating experience.

Cooling zones to offer essential amenities

These cooling zones are designed not merely as resting spots but as facilities that cater to the specific needs of the public. Visitors will have access to cold drinking water and ORS packets to help prevent heat-induced weakness. Furthermore, fire extinguishers have been installed for safety, and information regarding protection against heatwaves will be provided to help people stay safe during the hot season.

Who will benefit the most?

This initiative brings relief primarily to those who work outdoors throughout the day. This includes laborers, rickshaw and e-rickshaw pullers, pedestrians, the elderly, delivery personnel, and others working in open environments. During periods of intense heat and sunlight, these individuals can rest briefly in the cooling zones and protect themselves from the adverse effects of heatwaves.
