A Familiar Feature Returns to WhatsApp in a New Avatar: See a Complete List of Who Is Online

WhatsApp is currently developing a feature that will allow users to identify exactly which contacts within their list are currently online. This will make it easier for users to chat and communicate with contacts who are available online, and will also simplify the process of initiating a conversation at just the right moment.

Online Contact Information Also Available in Groups

According to the Android 2.24.25.30 update for WhatsApp Beta—and corroborated by the latest reports from WABetaInfo—this new feature could serve as a useful indicator of activity within a group. Specifically, this function will appear at the very top of any group interface, displaying exactly which of your contacts within that selected group are currently online—that is, actively present on the group. This allows you to initiate a chat with any user you see listed as online without having to scroll through the entire chat history. This functionality is expected to be particularly useful in large groups where user activity levels fluctuate frequently throughout the day.

It appears that WhatsApp is striving to present its activity indicators in a more effective and informative manner. This time around, alongside the contact’s name, the feature will also display their “Last Seen” status—indicating exactly how long ago they were last online. Furthermore, according to this new Android feature update, users will be able to view a comprehensive list of all their contacts who are currently online.

The Current System

Under the current system, if users wish to determine whether a specific contact is online, they must navigate to that individual’s chat window to check their status. This means that, for every contact, you have to open their respective chat window individually to verify their status. However, following the arrival of this new update, you will be able to view the entire list of online contacts simultaneously. The list will be prioritized based on “Last Seen” timestamps: contacts who were online, say, 10 minutes ago will appear lower down the list, while those who were online just 5 minutes ago will appear at the very top. Contacts who are not currently online will appear at the bottom of the list.

Adherence to WhatsApp Privacy Settings

However, there is one important caveat to keep in mind: if a user has disabled the options to display their “Last Seen” and “Online” status within their privacy settings, they will not appear in your list of online contacts. If a user has disabled only the “Last Seen” option, they may still appear lower down in the online list; however, if they have also disabled the setting to show their “Online” status, they will not appear in your list at all.
