A Big Gift for UP Farmers: They Can Now Sell Wheat at Government Centers Without Registration..

Wheat harvesting and sales have commenced across the country, including in Uttar Pradesh. The UP government has established hundreds of centers throughout the state for the procurement of wheat. Wheat procurement has already begun at these centers. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced another major boon for the state's farmers. He has declared that farmers in the state will now be able to sell their wheat at government centers even without prior registration.

A statement issued by the UP government indicates that this significant decision was taken in view of the inconveniences being faced by farmers. The Chief Minister has directed all District Magistrates to implement this order with immediate effect. The government has stated that farmers will no longer be required to produce a registration document to sell their wheat at any procurement center within the state. This decision will particularly benefit small farmers, who previously struggled to sell their produce at government centers, allowing middlemen to exploit the situation and engage in profiteering through commissions.

**What Were the Rules Until Now?**

For this year's wheat procurement drive, a 'Farmer Registry' has been made mandatory for farmers. Consequently, many farmers were unable to sell their wheat at government centers due to a lack of registration or technical glitches. This led to resentment among the farming community, forcing them to sell their wheat to middlemen at distress prices. Recognizing the plight of the farmers, the Chief Minister intervened immediately. Under the new order, farmers will now be able to sell their wheat at government centers without registration—just as they did in previous years.

**How Long Will Government Wheat Procurement Continue?**

This year, the UP government initiated wheat procurement for the Rabi season as early as March 30; this means that government procurement has already been underway in the state for 20 days. These procurement centers are scheduled to remain operational until June 15. Furthermore, the government has increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) this season. The MSP has been raised by ₹160 compared to last year, bringing it to ₹2,585 per quintal. The issuance of the order allowing wheat procurement without registration has provided farmers with even greater relief.
