During the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the government clarified the expected timeline for the report's submission and when a decision might be reached.

What was the government's response?

In the Rajya Sabha, MP Neeraj Shekhar asked the government whether the 8th Pay Commission would submit its report before the stipulated 18-month deadline. He also inquired about which employee and pensioner organizations the Commission has consulted so far and which ones remain to be consulted.

Responding to this query, Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Finance, stated that according to the government notification dated November 3, 2025, the Commission is required to submit its recommendations within 18 months of its constitution. However, he did not clarify whether the Commission would submit its report ahead of schedule.

Is there a requirement to provide updates on every meeting?

It was also asked in Parliament which individuals and organizations the Commission has consulted so far. The Minister replied that the notification dated November 3, 2025, contains no provision requiring the Commission to continuously update the government on its consultation process.

By when must the report be submitted?

The government issued the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Pay Commission in November 2025. According to these terms, the Commission must submit its report to the government within 18 months of its constitution. Based on this, the Commission has until May 2027 to submit its recommendations. However, a request to extend the deadline could be made if necessary. It is worth noting that meetings regarding the 8th Pay Commission are ongoing. A meeting was recently held in the capital, Delhi, following a two-day meeting in Kolkata. The Commission is engaging with central government employees, pensioners, and other relevant organizations across the country. More than 10 million central government employees and pensioners are awaiting the Commission's report.
