8th Pay Commission Update: Constituted on November 3, 2025, this panel has now completed approximately one-third of the 18-month timeframe allocated for submitting its recommendations.

8th Pay Commission: Six months have now passed since the constitution of the 8th Pay Commission. With this milestone, the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) has reached a decisive phase. There is now a strong possibility of a hike in the salaries and pensions of government employees and pensioners—an outcome awaited by millions of people. The government constituted the 8th Pay Commission in November 2025, and its recommendations are expected to come into effect starting January 2026.

How Much Time Remains?

The Commission's team is currently conducting meetings with various unions at the grassroots level. This team is scheduled to visit Hyderabad on May 18–19 and Srinagar between June 1–4 to gather feedback from employee organizations. Meanwhile, the Commission has extended the deadline for employee and pensioner associations to submit their demands and suggestions from April 30, 2026, to May 31, 2026.

Overall, the panel—constituted on November 3, 2025—has now completed roughly one-third of the 18-month timeframe allotted for submitting its recommendations, and the process has now entered its final stage. This means that only 12 months remain until the report of the 8th Pay Commission is released.

The Central Government had granted the 8th Pay Commission a period of 18 months—equivalent to 540 days—to submit its recommendations. Based on this schedule, the Commission is required to submit its report to the Central Government by May 2027.

What Will Happen During the Remaining 12 Months?

The Commission has extended the deadline for receiving online suggestions from employee unions and pensioners until May 31, 2026. Between June and December, the Commission will tour various states to hold direct consultations with representatives from the Railways, Defense, and other central departments.
Between January 2027 and May 2027, a final draft regarding salaries, pensions, and the fitment factor will be prepared after assessing the suggestions received and the government's revenue.
