Regarding these demands, the Commission recently held meetings with several unions, during which various requests concerning teachers' salaries and amenities were put forward. It is being suggested that if these demands are accepted, teachers' salaries could experience a massive surge. Let us explore which school teachers will see a salary hike under the 8th Pay Commission, and by how much...
**Which Teachers' Salaries Will Increase Under the 8th Pay Commission?**
The 8th Pay Commission is currently being formulated for central government employees. Consequently, teachers working in central schools will also benefit from this initiative. This will have a direct impact on PRT, TGT, and PGT teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS), and other central government-run schools. The salaries and allowances for all these categories of teachers are set to increase.
**How Much Will Teachers' Salaries Increase?**
The 8th Central Pay Commission held a series of meetings with various unions and organizations in Delhi from April 28 to April 30. During these meetings, the demands of both employees and teachers were heard. The government's objective is to formulate a new salary structure—incorporating advice from all major stakeholders—which will subsequently be presented to the Cabinet. A final decision regarding its implementation will be taken thereafter. Moving forward, the Commission will soon hold meetings in various states as well, in order to incorporate as many suggestions as possible. The most significant demand raised during these meetings regarding teachers was that the basic salary of entry-level (Level 6) government teachers be directly raised to ₹1,34,500. If this proposal is implemented, teachers in KVS, NVS, and other central schools will witness a massive jump in their earnings.
**Annual Increment to be Determined by the Fitment Factor**
The extent of the salary hike is ultimately determined by the Fitment Factor. Currently, this stands at 2.57, and it has been recommended that this be increased to a range of 2.62 to 3.83. At present, salaries increase by 3% annually; however, there is now a demand to raise this increment to 6–7%. This implies that annual salary increases could potentially double. Consequently, this would result in a significant boost not only to teachers' basic pay but also to their various allowances.
Major changes are also anticipated regarding DA and HRA:
1. HRA (House Rent Allowance): It has been recommended that this be increased to up to 36%, depending on the city's classification.
2. Given that the internet and digital gadgets have become necessities today, a separate 'Digital Allowance' of ₹2,000 per month has been requested to cover digital expenses.
3. A proposal has been put forward to provide ₹7,000 per month per child to cover educational expenses.
4. There is a demand that as soon as the Dearness Allowance (DA) reaches the 50% mark, it should be merged into the basic salary.
