8th Pay Commission: Review Should Occur Every 5 Years, Not 10—A Major Demand by Unions
8th Pay Commission Update: Unions argue that given the rapid pace at which inflation is rising, the salary hikes (DA) currently being provided are insufficient.
8th Pay Commission: Regarding the 8th Pay Commission, employee unions are continuously putting forward new demands. In this context, one of their latest demands is that the Pay Commission be reviewed every five years instead of every ten years.
The unions contend that, considering the speed at which inflation is escalating, the salary increments (DA) currently being granted are inadequate. They presented this demand recently during discussions held with the 8th Pay Commission in Delhi.
Widening Salary Disparities
Employee unions argue that conducting a Pay Commission review at 10-year intervals significantly widens the salary gap between lower-level employees and officers. This can be understood as follows: suppose an employee’s salary is ₹20,000, while an officer’s salary is ₹2,00,000.
In this scenario, if a 5 percent salary hike is granted under the Pay Commission, an employee with a basic salary of ₹20,000 would receive an increase of ₹1,000, whereas an officer would receive a direct increase of ₹10,000. This means that even though the percentage increase is identical, there is a substantial disparity in the actual monetary amount received. Several previous Pay Commissions have also suggested that the government should conduct periodic reviews of the Pay Commission rather than waiting for a long 10-year interval.
When Will the Next Meeting Take Place in Delhi?
Meanwhile, in an effort to extend the benefits of the 8th Pay Commission to Central Government employees and pensioners as soon as possible, further meetings between the Pay Commission and employee unions are scheduled to take place in Delhi over the next two days.
On May 13 and 14, crucial meetings involving the Pay Commission, as well as organizations, unions, and pensioners associated with the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Railways, are set to be held in Delhi. During this period, detailed discussions are expected to be held regarding issues related to employees’ salaries, pensions, allowances, and service rules.
To participate in these meetings, which are being organized by the Central Government, unions must apply via the NIC portal. Upon submission of the memorandum, a Memo ID will be issued. The application process will be completed using this ID.
