8th Pay Commission: Level 10 Employees to Earn ₹34 Lakh Extra Over 10 Years
Employees are eagerly awaiting the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. Amidst this, they have demanded a salary hike, with projections suggesting an additional earning of up to ₹34 lakh over a decade.
The Central Government approved the constitution of the 8th Pay Commission in November. Since then, the commission has been holding continuous meetings to discuss employee expectations regarding the commission and the government. Suggestions regarding salary increments are also being put forward during these meetings. Meanwhile, employee unions have demanded that the annual increment rate be raised from the current 3% to between 5% and 7%.
According to a report by The Economic Times, if the annual salary increment is raised to 7%, employees at certain levels could earn lakhs of rupees more in basic salary over 10 years compared to the current 3% increment.
₹34 Lakh Gain Over 10 Years
Estimates suggest that with such a salary hike, Level-10 employees could receive approximately ₹34 lakh in additional basic salary over a decade. Employee unions argue that the current 3% annual salary hike is insufficient to keep pace with inflation and rising expenses, which is why they are demanding an increase.
The report estimates the potential impact on employees’ basic salary—assuming a fitment factor of 2.15—if the annual increment is raised from 3% to 5% or 7%.
How Much Will Salaries Rise Based on Demands?
| Pay Level |
5% Increment |
7% Increment |
|---|---|---|
| Level 8 |
₹13.68 lakh |
₹28.89 lakh |
| Level 9 |
₹15.26 lakh |
₹32.23 lakh |
| Level 10 |
₹16.12 lakh |
₹34.05 lakh |
Varying Demands from Employee Unions
The report also highlights that different employee unions have put forward various suggestions regarding the increase in annual increments. The National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), the All India Defence Employees Federation (AIDEF), and the Federation of National Postal Organisations (FNPO) have suggested a 6% increase, while the All India New Pension Scheme Employees Federation (AINPSEF) has demanded an annual increment of 7%.
However, the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are currently awaited. It is estimated that the report could be released by June 2027, following which employees would receive a salary hike. As of now, the Commission has not provided any details regarding the fitment factor or other allowances.
